It’s nearly Thanksgiving. Can you believe it? The weather is getting cooler, school projects are wrapping up, and it is almost time to feast on some turkeys.
But as we get prepared for the whirlwind of cooking and visiting that make up the holiday, it is so important that we take a minute to stop the hubbub and think about our blessings. After all, we know that they are gifts from a gracious and loving Father.
Psalm 107:1 says,
“Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.”
And James 1:17 says,
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”
It is good to give thanks to God! But what about those days in which there seems to be little to feel thankful for? What about those days in which we can only seem to see the frustrations? How can we “give thanks to the Lord” then?
Well, here are a few posts (and a video!) on the subject!
- What to Do When You Don’t Feel Very Thankful, Proverbs 31 Ministries
“Many of the things entrusted to me in life were beginning to feel more like burdens than blessings.” In this post, Lysa TerKeurst shares her struggle to feel thankful and dependent on God in a life lived at a breakneck pace.
In this post here on the Wicket Gate, I listed 8 things that I know for sure you can be thankful for right now if you know Christ. No matter what circumstances you are in, we really can be thankful!
3. The First Thanksgiving, by the Skit Guys
When a pilgrim’s turkey feels like there is nothing to be thankful for in his life, the pilgrim sets him straight, reminding him of all the things God has blessed him with. Challenging and funny. I love The Skit Guys.
In this post on the Wicket Gate, I talked about things that we often overlook in our lists of things we are thankful for. God blesses us richly, and as we go through everyday life, sometimes we can overlook those blessings.
5. Thankful in Difficult Times, from Christ in the Clouds
Ann shares on her blog, Christ in the Clouds, about how God is teaching her to be grateful even for what she calls the “ugly-beautiful gifts,” those things that God can use for good even when they seem like nothing but a trial.
In this post, another from the Wicket Gate, I talked about the challenge that God had given me about the need to remember. Sometimes all of the blessings that God has given us in life get swallowed up by all the negative things or even just the busy things that we see right in front of us. But God has been so good to us and carried us through so far.
How do you keep yourself focused on the true reasons for giving thanks? What are some things you have to be thankful for?
